First Look: New coffee and ice cream bar on Winckley Street

Cedarwood Coffee Co. opened its doors for the first time after a successful planning application on Winckley Street last Monday, and I went down to the new shop to see what makes it so special.

I was treated to a tour of the former office block and dentist as it has been transformed to create a mini New York and Paris in different rooms upstairs. Each gave a homely and calming atmosphere to enjoy and makes the shop worth a visit, for the decor if nothing else!

Co-owner Jeremy Kellett showed me the different types of coffees and ice-creams on offer, and how the coffee is expertly made.

The shop hosts eight different types of tea, and is proud to locally source its coffee and ice cream from Atkinson’s and Bonds respectively.

Unfortunately coffee is not my cup of tea but the chocolate ice cream proved why that is the shops biggest seller.

While currently the shop focuses on drinks, ice cream and morning pastries, they say in future they will be looking to expand but it’s this niche product market that makes them so different to surrounding retailers.

Jeremy is pleased with the process so far, and how smoothly the development went from the initial nod of the head in the planning application. He said, “It’s very much got the finished result we were expecting and we have had a lot of positive comments.

“Pretty much it’s the coffee [that makes Cedarwood different to others] because it’s locally sourced from Lancaster. They are our coffee roasters and we have a close tie with them.

“Ideally it’s going to be more wet based, with drinks more than the food. We currently open from 8am until 6pm and we hope to extend that opening later into the evenings.”

The family-based business are very pleased with the initial successes as they find their feet as a coffee and ice-cream parlour. They currently have a promotional offer of buy one get one free on dining in drinks if you bring a friend, and for more information on the business and special offers visit their facebook page here, or check out their Instagram, or their website.
