A man entered Hassans Newsagents on Birkdale Drive and punched a 66 year old shop assistant several times in the face.
He demanded money and put it in a bag, but the brave shop worker managed to get out from behind the counter and alerted a passer-by. The would-be thief made off empty handed.
The incident took place around 8.50am on Wednesday 10 December.
DC Nicola Barnes of Preston CID said: “Although fortunately no money was taken from the shop, this was an unpleasant incident for the victim who suffered a nasty black eye. We are keen to try and identify the man in the CCTV images and anyone with information should contact us on 101 quoting log number 0206 of December 10th.”
He is described as around 5ft 7 tall, normal build and thought to be a teenager. He was wearing blue jeans and a distinctive blue thigh length winter jacket with red trim and three white or silver stripes on the hood. He was also wearing red gloves and was carrying a ladies style handbag with some sort of animal print on it.
