Dog wardens are beginning a crackdown on owners who let their pets foul in Preston cemetery and crematorium grounds.
AdvertisementDog control orders are in place at the Cemetery and Crem and these are to be tightly enforced in the coming weeks by Preston City Council.
Cabinet member for planning and regulation, councillor John Swindells said: “If you take your dog into the Cemetery or Crematorium grounds you must ensure that it remains on the lead at all times, that you keep your dog on the footpaths and of course you must clean up after your dog straight away if it fouls.
“Dog owners must respect the sacrosanct grounds of the Cemetery and Crematorium; irresponsible dog owners can cause upset and the council will take action to prevent this from happening.”
Since October two fixed penalty tickets have been served on dog walkers at Preston Cemetery who did not have their dog on a lead.
Clarke Taylor, Cemetery and Crematorium Manager, added: “Dogs are welcome in the grounds, but their owners must ensure they behave responsibly and follow the rules.
“Many dog owners probably don’t realise what their dog gets up to when it’s off the lead and out of their sight. There is now sufficient signage at entrances and within the Cemetery grounds; if dog owners do not follow the law then then are likely to be issued with a Fixed Penalty for £80.”
