Preston’s new-look Fishergate ground to a halt on Tuesday afternoon as taxi drivers blockaded to the road.

It is believed to have started when a taxi driver was ticketed for illegal parking.

Lancashire County Council started a crackdown on problem parking on the new look Fishergate as the roadworks finished.

The Preston Hackney Carriage Association said drivers were becoming frustrated about a lack of ranking spaces available in the city, especially while roadworks continue at the front of Preston Railway Station.

The county council said they were being “experimental” when it came to policing parking regulations on the new Fishergate shared space.

Phill Wilson, project manager for the City Deal delivery team, said: “We had already agreed to meet with the taxi drivers to discuss where we may be able to provide more space for them to wait in the city centre. This meeting will take place this week.

“Taxis have never been able to wait on Fishergate but the changes to traffic management as a result of the scheme mean that we’re able to discuss the options which may be available in the surrounding area.

“For practical reasons we’ve taken a more relaxed approach to traffic restrictions while the work has been ongoing but in order for traffic and pedestrians to use the scheme safely and as intended we’ve now begun enforcing the new regulations.

“The new restrictions have been put in place using a special ‘experimental’ legal order which means we’re able to adjust them over the coming months to resolve any issues which come up.

“The new arrangements will become easier for taxis once the new front entrance to the train station opens next week.”

A spokesman for Preston Bus said: “Apparently Fishergate is blocked by a taxi driver protest – so all services are being severely disrupted, especially Orbit buses. It’s having a knock on effect on other roads too, unfortunately.

“Apologies for the inconvenience, and thank you for your patience.”
