Hot on the heels of Preston being ranked as England’s wettest city we can now reveal we are also the gloomiest.

Compared to the rest of the United Kingdom we don’t fare well either, only Belfast, Armargh, Inverness and Glasgow get less sun than us Prestonians.
If you’re in the tourist office of Preston, we apologise unreservedly for this Met Office-based assault on any attempt to paint Preston as the Costa Del Preston.
(de)Preston would be closer to the truth when it comes to our weather, as the Met Office say we get 1,309.9 hours of sunshine on average per year. That’s just 3.6 hours on average each day.
Research of Met Office figures by the Trinity Mirror Data Unit, of the average hours of sunshine for UK cities, uses figures from 1981 to 2010 from hundreds of weather stations across the country.
The sunniest place in the UK is Portsmouth, which has 1,792.2 hours of sunshine a year. 482.3 hours of sunshine more than Preston.
