A Preston teenager who collapsed and died during a football match is to have a permanent memorial created for her.Advertisement
Melissa Smith was playing for Cadley FC, based in Fulwood, against Euxton Girls.
Euxton have announced they have discussed either having a memorial match each year between the two clubs or a plaque at the Greenside pitch.
Smith, 15, died after collapsing on the pitch.
She was treated with CPR and a defibrilator but was pronounced dead at Royal Preston Hospital on Sunday 19 October.
Cadley FC say they have been contacted by many people wanting to pay their respects to Melissa and her family.
A statement from the club said: “We would like to extend our thanks to everyone who has contacted us since Sunday to express their condolences following the sad loss of one of our players Melissa Smith.
“Many of you have asked about sending flowers or donations.
“Melissa’s parents have requested donations in her memory either to Cadley FC to go towards a defibrillator or Penwortham Girls’ High School to go towards a memorial trophy.”
Donations c/o Neal Buckley, Penwortham Funeral Service, 6 Liverpool Road, Penwortham, Preston. 01772 744700.
Melissa’s funeral is to be held on Wednesday at St Teresa’s Roman Catholic Church in Penwortham at 11am.
