A popular discount chain is looking to take over a currently vacant store at the Corporation Street Retail Park in the city centre.
Poundworld wants to open in the former Blockbuster video rental store.
Agents Indigo has submitted plans to Preston City Council to convert the vacant store for part food use. Currently, it is restricted from the sale of food.
The Blockbuster site has been vacant since the chain entered administration in December 2013. The rapid rise of online film streaming offered by the likes of Netflix and Lovefilm made Blockbuster’s DVD business model practically obsolete.
Poundworld is the only retailer to have expressed an interest in the property.
Indigo said: “The proposed variation of the condition is to meet the retailing needs of Poundworld and will bring the vacant unit back into beneficial use.”
Poundland, Europe’s biggest single price discount retailer, was awarded ‘Variety Discounter of the Year’ for 2014 in the Grocer Gold Awards.
Poundworld already has two other sites in Preston, at Deepdale and in St Georges Shopping Centre and has over 500 stores in the UK and the Republic of Ireland.
