A new Morrisons store in Ashton is seeking to extend its Sunday trading hours.
AdvertisementThe Morrisons Local which opened in what was a car showroom on Blackpool Road says it is not able to compete with a nearby Bargain Booze.
It is currently restricted to opening from 10am to 4pm on Sundays and Bank Holidays but the supermarket chain has applied to extend this by nine hours in total.
Morrisons want to be able to open from 7am to 10pm.
Documents submitted to the city council’s planning department state: “The longer Sunday trading hours of the nearby Bargain Booze not only means the M Local Store is unable to compete effectively, but also demonstrates that a convenience store can operate in this location during the proposed hours without having a detrimental impact on residential amenity.
“It is not uncommon for Sunday trading hours of small-scale convenience stores to be consistent with weekday trading hours, and this is highlighted by the fact that customers enter the site expecting the M Local store to be open after 4pm on a Sunday.”
The supermarket says the proposal will not affect the local area in terms of noise from cars parking up at the store.
