RSPCA clinic

The refurbished Preston RSPCA/My Vet clinic on North Lancaster Road in Preston re-opened today.

The clinic invited the public to bring their cats and dogs for free microchipping at the re-launch – and the surgery was packed.

John Gillmore from BBC Radio Lancashire broadcast live from 1pm and officially helped cut the ribbon to declare the clinic open live on radio together with a group of trustees, veterinary nurses and helpers. At least one member of the public joined in, their pet dog waiting to get inside.

Old and new clients were invited to tell of how the clinic had helped them and their pets over the past 45 years. Help was on hand from Animal Centre Manager, John Wareing and veterinary nurses to answer any questions on how they could possibly aid more people on certain benefits get affordable veterinary care for their animals.

The new venture is a joint enterprise between Preston RSPCA and Myerscough Vets. The Board of Trustees, in particular Julie Eastwood, worked tirelessly to make the project a reality.

John Gillmore provided entertaining and informative commentary throughout the afternoon chatting to staff and clients alike.

Julie Bell from the centre commented ‘You, our supporters saved us form closure and we hope you will share our sense of pride that we are still here and are able to help many more animals.’ In fact they helped over 50 animals today alone!

John Wareing reminded people although it had been a year since the Preston RSPCA said they were only days away from closing it’s still a struggle for them. He asks the public to continue donating. He would particularly people to donate cat food and wood based cat litter. They get through a lot! John reminded people that there are drop-off bins at Morrisons and Asda supermarkets in Preston. Every extra sachet of cat food they receive helps enormously.

John also asked if anyone could spare a few hours a week to help out to please contact the centre via phone and request an application form.

The centre, which had previously only been open for around 3 hours a day is now set to stay open 5 days a week.

A big thanks to Myerscough Veterinary Group who helped to take over the operation of the clinic and marks a new collaboration with the charity. Myerscough’s aim is to provide high quality care, delivered by a dedicated team of vets and support staff.
