DC Karen Johnson from Southern CID said: “This was a nasty attack and it is only sheer luck that the victim was not seriously injured.

“I would appeal to anybody that witnessed this assault or with any information about the men responsible to contact police.

“It is also important that we trace the woman that came to the victim’s aid as she could have key information vital to our investigation.

“The group of men responsible were witnessed chasing another man, unconnected to this incident, to a house on Martinfield Road where criminal damage has been caused to the front door. I would also be keen to speak with anyone that may have witnessed this or knows any of the men involved.”

Anyone with information should call Lancashire Police on 101.
