The leader of Preston City Council could see his pay rise by nearly 16%.

An independent panel has recommended Peter Rankin should see his pay rise from £8,844 to £10,256.

This is on top of Councillor Rankin’s basic allowance of £3,567.

The Preston Independent Renumeration Panel has also recommended a 1% increase in councillor pay across the board, backdated to April 2013.

The 1% matches the pay increase to Town Hall staff in this financial year.

The panel also says the rate of pay for councillors and the council leader is low compared to neighbouring local authorities.

Councillors will be asked to vote on whether to accept the recommendations of the independent panel at a full meeting of the council on Thursday 12 December.

You can read the full documents about councillors pay on the council website.
