The student and two friends were walking along Friargate on Saturday 16 November at 3.45am when the men approached them.

After an altercation two or three of the men punched the student in the face several times before leaving the scene.

PC Susan Rainford said: “It is only fortunate that the victim was not more severely injured and this has left him shaken and so we are keen to trace the people responsible.

“If anybody saw what happened on the night then I would urge them to contact police.”

All of the men in the group are believed to be black or mixed race and in their early 20s.

One of the men was wearing a black t-shirt and was of stocky build.
