A plaque to celebrate the Preston Guild Wheel cycle route was unveiled today.

One of the designers of the Wheel route, Peter Ward, was joined by Preston City Council leader Peter Rankin and County councillor Marcus Johnstone to pop the blue plaque on some granite at Preston’s docks.

The Wheel route has been recognised by the Institution of Civil Engineers for its role in boosting tourism and outdoors exercise in the city and surrounding area.

The plaque also pays tribute to co-designer of the wheel, the late Mike Atkins, who passed away in January this year.

Stretching 21 miles around the city, the Wheel has become a popular route for cyclists and walkers.
