More than 15,000 litres of waste oil is floating in a Fulwood brook.
AdvertisementThe Environment Agency are appealing for information after the oil was found in a 3km tributary of Savick Brook in Masonwood Park and also further down near Eastway.
Makeshift dams have been set up to try to stop the oil making its way into the River Ribble.
Steve Moore, the Environment Agency’s director for the North West, tweeted the photo below of their efforts.
A spokeswoman for the Agency’s North West division said: “We are coordinating an emergency clean-up operation at both sites and working with our partners to minimise the impact.
“Tipping of oil is a serious crime and in this case we suspect the incident happened on Thursday or Friday last week.
“We are keen to hear from anyone who saw a tanker in these locations or who has knowledge of this incident.”
Anyone with information can call 0800 80 70 60 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
