An artists impression of how Fishergate could look in the future
A decision on whether to pedestrianise one of the city’s major roads will be taken next month.
The city council has applied for permission to change Fishergate to one lane solely for buses and block off side streets to traffic.
Investment in the scheme, known as Fishergate Central, is expected to run to millions of pounds.
Fishergate as it is now
Documents published by the city council outline the plan will “bring for the first time to Preston a truly City Centre feel” and “create a high quality retail experience.”
The proposal goes to the leader of Lancashire County Council, the cabinet member for highways and transport and the cabinet member for economic development, environment and planning.
The scheme has been given the nod of approval from the government and the county council must now decide whether to back the plan.
A decision is due by Tuesday 12 February.
