A Lancashire police spokeswoman on Friday evening said: “Extensive area searches in the area around the River Ribble after a canoe was found upturned in the water at Penwortham have now been completed. Searches were conducted along the river side by Bowland Pennine Mountain Rescue Team, and on the water by the Lancashire Fire & Rescue Service boat.

“Nothing untoward has been found and so they have now been stood down. No one has yet come forward to claim ownership of the canoe.”

Police are asking the owner of the canoe or anyone with information to call 101 quoting log number LC-20120810-0970.
