Family members have been paying tribute to a pensioner who died following a bus crash in the city centre.

Dorothy Sumner fell and broke her hip while travelling on a double decker bus down Church Street.

The bus collided with a Vauxhall Corsa on Wednesday 7th March and Mrs Sumner was knocked to the floor.

She contracted pneumonia while in hospital and died on Friday 23rd March.

The 87 year old’s family said she will be “greatly missed”.

A statement from the family said: “Dot’s family and friends have been deeply distressed and shocked at her untimely death. She was the family matriarch. It has been hard to comprehend that a quick bus journey to purchase a few groceries could end in such tragic circumstances.”

Police are appealing for information about the collision to try and piece together the events leading to the death of the Ribbleton pensioner.

Sergeant Steve Wignall from the Road Policing Unit said: “I would appeal to anybody that witnessed this collision or with any information that could assist with our investigation to come forward about contact Lancashire Police on 101.”
