The man, from Leyland, had stopped to talk to speak to a group of people outside the club who then turned on him.

The victim is still being treated in Royal Preston Hospital.

DC Geoffrey Wade from Preston CID said: “This appears to be unprovoked and particularly violent assault on a man enjoying a night out.

“The incident has taken place on a street which was fairly busy at the time with people either making their way home or changing venues.”

“I would urge anybody that witnessed this assault or with any information that could assist us with our investigation to come forward and contact police.”

Anyone with any information should call Lancashire Police on 101.

People with information can also contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or on-line at Crimestoppers-uk.org. No personal details are taken, information is not traced or recorded and you will not go to court.
