Online petition calls for referendum on future of Preston Bus Station

Campaigners fighting to save Preston’s Bus Station have launched an epetition on the council website calling for a referendum to decide the building’s future.

The petition, put forward by John Wilson who tweets as @SaveBusStation, was initially rejected by the chief executive of Preston council but has since been reworded and approved.

The wording on the petition states:

We the undersigned petition the council to ‘Hold a full Council debate to decide on the future of Preston Bus Station and to allow the People of Preston to vote on a Referendum’. Tithebarn has now gone. There is an alternative.

The Bus Station is ‘Iconic’ and ‘Unique’. It serves the people of Preston and Lancashire. It is in dire need of maintenance. You should ask your Councillor for his or her views, tell them your view and also this: “You can fool some of the people some of the time. You can fool most of the people most of the time. But you cannot fool all of the people all of the time.” Abraham Lincoln

The epetition will run until the 16th January 2012 and once finished it could force a full council debate.

If the petition reaches more than 1,350 signatures it will trigger a full council debate on the issue.

The launch of the epetition comes just 24 hours after the announcement that John Lewis had pulled out of the Tithebarn project, effectively stalling any redevelopment of the city centre.

Under plans for the redevelopment the bus station, built in the 1960s and voted as an icon of modern architecture, would be demolished.
