A guide to Valentine’s Day in Preston: The couple’s special

Why not book a last-minute Italian meal at the Olive Press?

Valentine’s Day is here again. Cupids arrows are shooting across the room, it’s time to show that special someone just how much you care.

Walking through the city centre there are groups of girls giggling over who might be their admirer, women picking out that special card and aftershave and men quickly glancing at the huge heart cut out hanging in every shop window thinking: “Oh god, what am I going to get her?”.

I have to ask, when did this special day become so commercialised? Why can’t we show we love each other by purely spending time together?

As someone in a relationship myself, it has got to the point where everything I could have bought, he got for Christmas. Anything I get now will be shoved to the back of a cupboard never to be seen again.

So here is what I suggest for anyone else out there who doesn’t have a clue. Let’s get out of the house and enjoy an evening or the weekend together. It may be romantic, it may not, but time together is a definite pleaser.

In this vibrant city we call home, there is a whole variety of places to visit.

For those who are more traditional there is the romantic sit down dinner, but where to go? Here is your answer.

The Olive Press in Winckley Square is offering an Italian, candle lit dinner for two. Handmade pasta  and stonebaked pizza topped off with cocktails will make this an authentic experience that will leave you both smiling.

If that doesn’t take you fancy then try out Duk on Lancaster Road. This award winning tapas restaurant offers everything from chili chicken to blueberry steak, with a wide variety between. With something for everyone you can’t go wrong.

Now some of you may not be impressed by this so what about dancing the night away?

If this sounds like your cup of tea then Preston Masonic Hall have just the night for you. A Valentines ball, cocktail dresses and lounge suits, definitely a night with a difference.

Entertainment from the Zeta and Lee Experience mean hours of twirling on the dance floor and holding each other close.

For the more sporty couple, how about an evening at West View Leisure Centres‘ climbing wall? Open week days from 9am to 10pm and weekends 9am – 9pm, there is plenty of time to get your tracksuits out.

The great thing about climbing is that even if you’re lacking in co-ordination you can spend your time falling into each other’s arms.

This may need to be followed up by some relaxation, so why not book into a spa for the next day, or if you up early enough, that afternoon?

Looking Good spa in Little Hoole offers everything you could want. A massage, detox wrap, facials, rescue feet therapy plus more.

The bonus here is that time can be booked for couples; both can lay back and relax at the same time so no one is getting bored waiting for the other one.

If I haven’t provided any inspiration with any of these events then here come the big guns.

A boat cruise. Yes that’s right, a cruise. You’re probably thinking that is far too expensive, well hang on.

Jump in the car on February 12 and head over to Chorley for a romantic cruise on Leeds Liverpool canal.

On board the family run Royal Sovereign awaits a three course meal, disco, and entertainment for a full four hours at £22.50 per person.

Last but not least, this little treat is extra special.

Set in 11 acres of greenery a grand Victorian manor house stands, sporting the name Marriott. This 4 star hotel could be just the place for a night away.

Over the weekend before Valentine’s enjoy dinner, bed and breakfast, chocolates and champagne. An in room movie is supplied and late checkout is available for you to enjoy a lie in.

For £150 it is definitely cheaper than jetting off to Paris but far enough away you hopefully won’t be running into the neighbours.

After reading this I will have hopefully provided you an alternative to wondering around town being indecisive so there should be nothing left to do but wish everyone good luck and a very happy Valentine’s day.
