Smoke from huge Merseyside fire seen in Penwortham

A huge fire at a recycling plant in Newton-le-Willows could be smelled from as far away as Penwortham this afternoon.

The blaze, in Earlstown, was declared a major incident as 20 fire crews tried to quell the flames, on the hottest day of 2020 so far.

The fire broke out among plastic pallets at the recycling plant on the Great Sankey Industrial Estate at 11am this morning (Wednesday May 20).

Roads were closed and by 1pm it had been declared a major incident as smoke could be seen and smelled from across the North West.

Simon Ebo spotted the smoke from Leyland Road in Penwortham and sent the photos to Blog Preston.
