One of the biggest developments in Preston’s recent history looks set for approval.
AdvertisementAdelphi Square would see a new flagship student centre building and the complete remodelling of the current Adelphi roundabout.
It follows the demolition of the UCLan’s former Fylde building and plans show how seven properties in St Peter’s Street would also be knocked down to make way for the development.
The centre-piece of the university’s £200million campus masterplan, the Adelphi Square scheme would see a new road layout and shared space introduced on the current road network.

Here’s how our readers responded to the prospect
Great idea but poor execution. Traffic doesn’t just disappear. Will anyone at LCC or PCC learn from their mistakes? Does the public get to use any of the facilities? So during the summer when PCity becomes a ghost town is this standing unused?
Colour me shocked. Was it ever in doubt they’d get a green light? No lessons learned from Fishergate disaster. Bad enough trying to get to & from work now.
Shared spaces don’t work, many drivers completely ignore the crossings. As a walker I have rarely had anyone stop for me to let me across and as a driver I have had other drivers honk at me for letting people cross. BAD IDEA. Though as a student at the uni I love to see it expanding and becoming a more internationally recognised University.
This plan looks interesting though the shared space doesn’t work, that zone is already busy with the traffic lights in place as a student I wouldn’t feel safe with a shared space crossing.
It will all end in tears mark my words. Fisher gate and Butler St springs to mind. I’m very proud of having UCLAN in Preston and it brings lots of revenue to the city. But do the powers that be have the concept to think things through and consider all the people of Preston, I think not!
I honestly don’t know how this will work with the volume of traffic that passes through the Adelphi junction.
Without UCLan Preston would be a ghost town …. why do people hate success?
