A statement from Preston Bus said: “Be advised, traffic is likely to build up through Preston as people are diverted off the motorway.

“Apologies for any delays. Our thoughts are with everyone involved, including the emergency services.”

Stagecoach are also reporting long delays on the services 40 and 41 between Preston and Lancaster.

Police issued an update at 10.07am: “All the vehicles have now been removed to the hard shoulder awaiting recovery.”

A spokeswoman for the North West Ambulance Service said they were called to treat six people at the scene.

She said: “We had a doctor on the scene that was able to look over the patients.

“One person was taken to hospital – at Lancaster Royal Infirmary.”

The person is not understood to have received major injuries.
