Since her first political foray in the late 1970s she’s seen Preston change.
AdvertisementBut from her time representing the area of St Matthews a former councillor is to be recognised.
Veronica Afrin, 80, is to be made an honorary alderman of the city.
The honour, which has only been bestowed on 28 people since 1974, transcends political parties.
An extraordinary meeting of Preston City Council has been called for Thursday 29 June from1 11am.
At this meeting it’s expected for former councillor Afrin to receive the title.
Leader of the Labour group and council leader Peter Rankin will ask the council to support his motion to make Veronica Afrin an alderman for her services to the city.
Alderman titles are appointed on councillors who have done more than 15 years service, they have no voting rights and it is a ceremonial title only.
When she announced she was stepping down in 2016, we sat down with Veronica to discuss her time as a councillor.
