The grade-II listed building has seen millions of pounds spent on concrete repairs and a revamp of the parking facilities.

It is one of the first stages in major changes to the building, which include using only half of it as a Bus Station, and the building of a Youth Zone on its western apron.

Lancashire County Council says the Bus Station now has wider parking spaces, new lighting, car park surfaces, payment machines and security cameras.

Safety fencing has also been put up on the top of the building – after a number of people have sadly lost their lives.

The northern ramps to the car park have been reopened and resurfaced.

The county council obtained listed building consent for all the works.

Leader of the county council Jennifer Mein said: This is another step forward for our redevelopment of the building, which will make the car park levels more welcoming and encourage more people to use them.

“Similar work will be carried out on the other levels to renovate the entire car park. I’m sure that people will see a big difference.

“It’s a big challenge to carry out this work while the building is still open, but we hope that people will bear with us while it’s being done. We’re doing everything we can to keep the disruption to a minimum.

“There’s a lot of work going on in the building, especially around the concourse, as we improve this listed building for everyone who uses it.”
