A Fulwood doctor’s surgery has been left with six months to turn things round after its latest inspection.

Broadway Surgery, run by Dr Dineshchandra Patel and Dr Melanie Walsh, has been branded ‘inadequate’ by health experts.

A report for the Care Quality Commission by Professor Steve Field raises serious concerns about the level of safety for patients and a lack of leadership.

Ratings of care for all age groups was inadequate across the board at the surgery, which is in the Broadway, Fulwood, and has a sister surgery operating in Ingol.

Dr Field’s report, in early December, says the surgery is good for being caring and responsive. It requires improvement for being effective in its providing care.

His report detailed the following failings:

– Appropriate recruitment checks are not being carried out on staff prior to their employment.

– There is no systematic approach to managing risks e.g. no fire risk assessment available

– A lack of governance arrangements and policies were not easily accessible to staff

– Work is needed to improve infection control in the practice

Dr Field said: “I am placing this service in special measures. Services placed in special measures will be inspected again within six months. If insufficient improvements have been made such that there remains a rating of inadequate for any population group, key question or overall, we will take action in line with our enforcement procedures to begin the process of preventing the provider from operating the service.

“This will lead to cancelling their registration or to varying the terms of their registration within six months if they do not improve.”

A statement released by the surgery said: ““We would like to reassure our patients that we always aim to provide a high quality standard of care, which is very important to us. We had a rating of ‘good’ for being caring and responsive and are working very hard to make improvements in the areas where we were rated less than ‘good’.”

The CQC inspection only covered the Broadway Surgery, not its sister practice in Ingol. The full CQC report can be viewed on their website.
