Commuters using Preston Railway Station on Thursday morning saw cancellations and delays following an incident at Wigan North Western station.

A police spokesman said: “Shortly before 8.40am officers were called to Wallgate to reports of a collapsed archway. A section of wall had collapsed onto parked cars nearby.

“Road closures are in place on Queen Street, King Street West, Wallgate and Great George Street.
“Wigan North Western station has been evacuated and closed.”
Nobody was injured and lines were reopened with speed restrictions at around 10am.
Latest updates from National Rail indicate there will be disruptions on Northern trains between Preston and Wigan, Transpennine Express services to Manchester Airport and the Virgin Trains to Birmingham New Street and London Euston until midday.
Disruption cleared from lunchtime on Thursday, but delays between Preston and Blackpool are now occurring due to a broken down train at Kirkham. Disruption is expected until around 6pm on Thursday.
