A housing association has begun to dismantle part of a garden created by one of its tenants in the last 11 years.

Jam Imani Rad claims he was hurt in a scuffle on Tuesday morning as statues were toppled and plants uprooted.

He said a number of workmen arrived and began to remove parts of the garden.

Jam has a bump on his forehead he claims came from when the workmen arrived.

He said: “I hope Gateway realise what they are destroying. This is beautiful. It is for the community.

“I do not know if I am going to prison or when. They have not arrived yet. But Gateway came and they took some of the garden.”

His neighbour Ashley, who has lived next door for two years, said: “I’ve no problem with the garden. It’s lovely. Coming out each morning and seeing it makes me smile.”

Volunteers are beginning to dig up parts of the garden to take it to the Beautiful Planet cafe in Friargate so it can be preserved.

Community Gateway released a statement after the court hearing explaining their position on the garden.

More than 6,000 people have signed a petition calling for Jam and his garden to be saved.
