Last ditch efforts are being made to find a buyer for the iconic chain, which was sold by multi-millionaire Sir Philip Green last year.

Up to 580 staff are to be affected at the first 20 shops to close.

British Home Stores said it was trying to find temporary work for staff affected at nearby stores.
