“She always took all the youngsters from her neighbourhood to play football at the local park. She was a very polite, well-mannered girl who had a heart of gold and she would do anything for anybody.

“Rachel was a loving daughter, sister, granddaughter, niece and cousin to many and will be missed by so many. We the family would like to have some privacy at this time while we try and come to terms with our loss.”

Rachel died after crossing the busy stretch of road, her friend 17-year-old Shelby Maher also died after being taken to Royal Preston Hospital.

Sergeant James Power of the Road Policing Unit said: “Two young people have tragically lost their lives in this collision and their families are being supported at this time by specially trained officers.

“I would appeal to anyone who saw what happened to contact the police on 101 quoting log number 1233 of April 20th.”

The driver of a BMW, a 21-year-old man from Blackburn, was not injured but was treated for shock.
