A 21-year-old woman from Ribbleton and a 17-year-old girl from Deepdale were struck by a car in Brockholes Brow shortly before 7pm on Wednesday (April 19).

Preston Police closed the road for more than three hours while an investigation took place.

A third person, an 15-year-old girl from Ribbleton, was also injured, and is in a stable condition in hospital. She is suffering from a possible broken leg and broken arm.

An eyewitness – who asked not to be named – described coming up the A59 at Brockholes Brow shortly before the incident took place.

He said: “I was coming up and it happened very fast. Someone’s come round the corner and the girls have been crossing the road.

“I didn’t see it but I knew something had happened. It’s just terrible. The families are just in pieces.”

A paramedic who was called to the scene tweeted that the incident was ‘tragic’.

The family of one of the girls killed, Rachel Murphy, have released a tribute.

Lancashire Police said the driver of a BMW involved, aged 21, was not injured but is being treated for shock.

Sergeant James Power, of the Road Policing Unit, said: “Two young people have tragically lost their lives in this collision and their families are being supported at this time by specially trained officers.

“I would appeal to anyone who saw what happened to contact the police on 101 quoting log number 1233 of April 21st.”
