Roads across Preston and the surrounding are are to be gritted on New Year’s Eve as temperatures plummet.

After weeks of heavy rain the worry is now of ice on the roads as 2015 comes to a close.

Lancashire County Council will have its gritting fleet out for all key routes in Preston and beyond.

The Met Office expects temperatures to fall to just above freezing overnight.

New Year’s Day will be a generally cloudy day with temperatures around five degrees Celsius.

The weather forecast for the first week of the New Year sees light rain predicted for Saturday and heavy rain in Sunday, with temperatures staying around eight degrees.

In Croston the repair work on the River Douglas flood wall continues with the Army Chinook helicopter in action once more.

Flood warnings remain in place for the village which has been hit hard by flooding since Boxing Day.

A fundraising campaign to help villagers pay their insurance excess has now reached more than £4,500.
