Fulwood Barracks looks set for expansion as more troops move in to Preston.Advertisement
Plans from the Ministry of Defence were submitted in August to build a new gym and store rooms.
The 3 Medical Regiment are now housed at the grade-II listed military compound and 2,450 additional square metres of buildings are needed.
Planning officers at Preston City Council have given their backing to the plans, which are within the Conservation Area for Garrison ward so need council approval.
They state: “The proposed development is part of a MoD programme to secure necessary improvements to accommodation and despite the loss of some trees has been sensitively designed to be in keeping with the existing site and would not significantly affect the setting of the grade II listed buildings within the site or the character and appearance of the Fulwood Conservation Area.
“No objections have been received to the proposal. It complies with the relevant provisions of the development plan and there are no material considerations which outweight this finding.”
The plans are due to be heard by councillors on the planning committee on Thursday 5 November from 1.30pm at the Town Hall.
