The guard was threatened with a single barrelled sawn off shotgun by two men while making a collection from the JTF Megastore Warehouse in Pittman Way.

The men are believed to have taken the box containing around £3,000 and escaped in a silver Ford Fiesta where a third man was waiting.

They drove off in the direction of the M55 and Durton Lane, with the vehicle having what is believed to be a false registration of A058 YWC.

At the time of the offence at 1.50pm on Thursday the men were wearing dark clothing and balaclavas.

Det Insp Jane Webb from Preston CID said: “This was a terrifying ordeal for the victim and he was very fortunate to not have been injured.

“The cash box that the offenders took is a specially adapted container which activates red smoke so the offenders will now be covered in red dye.

“Thankfully, we have located the box not far away from where the robbery took place on Olivers Place, fortunately with the cash, which was covered in the dye, still inside.

“I am asking anyone who may have witnessed the vehicle, the offenders or indeed anyone who has any information about this incident to call us immediately.”

Anyone with information can contact Preston CID on 01772 209741. If they fail to get an answer, they can call 101 quoting incident reference 655 of July 9th.

Information can be reported anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555111 or online at Crimestoppers-uk.org. No personal details will be taken and you will not have to go to court.
