An all-weather sports pitch at a Preston leisure centre is to be replaced after being worn out.
AdvertisementWest View Climbing and Leisure Centre’s pitch has operated since 2005 and if not upgraded would lose the council £1.2 million.
Preston City Council’s cabinet is being asked to spend £55,000 for a new pitch.
Councillors must pick between two options for repairing the pitch – either closing it for three weeks and doing the full work now or making repairs to the centre of the pitch, which is worn through, and replacing the rest of the in three years time.
The average 3G artificial pitch lasts for 12 years.
Officers are urging cabinet to make the full replacement of the pitch, as they say it will save £13,025 in the long-run.
A statement from city council officers says: “To maintain the current income stream from hire fees that would otherwise be lost. Replacement of the pitch ensures facilities at West View Climbing & Leisure Centre are not reduced with the potential subsequent on the health and wellbeing of residents.”
