A short film highlighting the dangers of hoax calls to the emergency services has been made by Preston volunteers.

Young people working with the Princes Trust made the 12-minute show which follows the story of Josh.

He has a difficult home life and neglectful parents, he is bullied at school and is led astray by the gang.

Josh ends up making a malicious call to the fire service which results in a delayed response to a genuine house fire across town. This results in a fatality.

Helen Stanley, a team leader at Preston Prince’s Trust, said: “The team hope to be able to demonstrate to other young people that a split second decision can have a devastating impact on the individual and the wider community.

“Many of the young people on Preston T55 [The Princes Trust course] have had similar experiences to the character in their film. They have worked tirelessly and with lots of emotion to plan; storyboard; write a script and produce this film in little over a week. They plan to promote the project in schools and young people’s services next week before its official opening/release on the 28th February.”

The Princes Trust course in Preston works with young people aged 16-25 to build their confience, self esteem and team skills over 12 weeks. It often works with those in custody or who have recently been released.

Money for the film, costing £450, was raised after the team spent a day bag packing

The team have worked in conjunction with Lancashire Fire and Rescue service.

Brad Walker, fire safety manager for the Central Lancashire area, said: “The team have wrote the script, arranged and selected all the venues, acted out the scenes and have carried out the directing and production of the film.

“It gets across the danger of making hoax calls, and also shows what a valuable project the Princes’ Trust is.”
