CCTV stills, pictured above, have been released by detectives who want to speak to the man in the photos who was seen with the woman before she entered the vehicle.
A 44 year old man from Accrington has been released on bail after being arrested on suspicion of sexual assault.
The 26-year-old woman was helped into a black cab outside The Assembly pub at 3.30am on Sunday 31 March, she was then subsequently sexually assaulted in the taxi.
Police want to speak to a man being described as a “Good Samaritan” who helped the woman get into the taxi but did not travel with her.
Detective Sergeant Steve Ryder said: “The man who helped the woman was wearing a white top and helped her to get into the taxi around 3.30am. If this was you, or you know who this was, please contact police. We believe this man may have crucial information which could help with our investigation.
“We do have CCTV of the man, although it’s not the best quality, but if you recognise him please come forward. I want to stress this man is a witness and acted as a Good Samaritan with the intention of getting the woman home safely, he did not get in the taxi with her.
“We are also trying to trace a woman who assisted the young lady out of the side door of the pub at 3.20am. Again, if this was you, please come forward, you may also have information which could assist us.”
