A police officer was taken to hospital last night after being attacked by a group of men.
Senior officers have slammed the incident as “disgraceful” and have called for witnesses to come forward.
The attack happened in Avenham just before 8pm on Saturday 5 January when the officer approached a group of ten youths.
He was attacked from behind and knocked unconscious between Duke Street and Albyn Bank Road.
The officer was taken to Royal Preston Hospital and treated for cuts and bruises to his face. He is now recovering at home.
Seven men, aged between 14 and 32, all from Preston, have been arrested on suspicion of wounding.
DCI Ian Dawson from Preston Police said: “This is a disgraceful incident against a highly respected police officer who was simply doing his job and trying to keep the community safe.
“Our investigation is still ongoing and a number of other people are actively being sought.
“I would urge anybody who was in the Avenham area around 8pm last night who thinks they may have witnessed this assault or with any information that could assist with our investigation to come forward and call Lancashire Police on 101.
“Fortunately incidents of this nature are rare but they will not be tolerated and we need the public’s help to bring those responsible to justice.”
