I noticed posts from a band called False Flag on Facebook talking about their debut EP, Love & Light which, they said, was recorded in houses around Preston using whatever gear they had to hand and a laptop, on a budget of nothing. I had to have a look and listen. I discovered an amazing band. With an amazing sound.

I had to know more so I asked a few questions about the band, their music and where it’s taking them. This is False Flag in their own words:

“We started off as a band called Crazy808, initially wanting to sound like Atari Teenage Riot. As our song-writing talents were defined, we started developing our own sound; shying away from a hard-hitting Industrial sound, making stronger, more interesting songs.

The addition of Dave Prachnio on drums helped us to spread our wings into new genres and become more of a live band as apposed to a recording project.

Our aim is to mix our influences, both musical and non-musical, to make a sound which suits our personalities and lyrics that reflect the people we are. Sometimes this means laid back dub, but other times this could be three-chord punk nonsense.

We all come from different musical backgrounds but are united by of passion for music. I can’t say we have a main influence but here is a small list of names. We are self confessed music geeks. Darkthrone/Front 424/New Order/Todd Terge/Fiona Apple/Dillinger Escape Plan/Soulwax/The Specials/King Tubby/Avishai Cohen Trio/David Rodigan/Congo Natty/Ceephax Acid Crew.

The (Love & Light) EP took about 3 months. It could probably have been done in a third of that but getting everyone together can be hard. The Drums where recorded in Dave’s Bedroom and everything else in my living room. We wanted to get some tracks down that we had practiced to help finalise them and also have something to give to people.

We are next playing The Mad Ferret in Preston on the 16th of February. We’d like to try and play outside of Preston, but we are finding it hard to get any connections.

We plan to write more material, gig and maybe make a full length LP at the end of the year”

Have a listen to their music.
