Preston to adopt Royal Navy ship at Riversway Festival

HMS Charger will be in action on Preston’s Marina

The people of Preston will adopt one of the Royal Navy’s ships as part of the Riversway Festival.

In a special ceremony to mark the Preston Guild, HMS Charger, will dock a Preston Marina on Saturday 21 July.

The 20-metre long ship will be boarded by the Guild Mayor and VIPS in the Riversway lock before moving into the dock basin.

The adoption ceremony will take place at 1.30pm, with speeces and local sea cadets will form a guard of honour.

Guild Mayor, Councillor Carl Crompton, said: “The adoption of HMS Charger in time for this year’s Guild celebrations marks the start of this special relationship with the Royal Navy.

“The people of Preston recognise the significance of all our Armed Forces and the important work they carry out.

“The Riversway annual festival is always well supported, but for the Guild it will be even bigger and better than before. I’m just hoping for some sunshine!”

HMS Charger is normally based in Liverpool and will be docked in the Marina for the public to board.

She can be boarded between 3pm to 6pm on Saturday 21 July and against from 10am to 12noon on Sunday 22 July.
