Terry Cartwright was killed in a collision with a lorry on the M6 yesterday.
The statement from the family of the 58-year-old paid tribute to Terry’s previous battles with illness.
It reads: “Terry Cartwright was a 58 year old devoted hard working husband, a loving father to his two children and a fun loving granddad to his granddaughter. Terry lived for his biking and his friends and was instrumental in setting up many charity events which included taking toys to sick children at Christmas on his bike, he was also an animal lover and doted on his two Alsatians.
“In 2007 Terry had a Brain Haemorrhage and did his best to maintain a normal life; however he shortly developed lymphoedema and diabetes which was difficult to live with as Terry had always been a healthy and active person.
“Although Terry had plenty of friends and a great support network, in March 2012 when Terry lost his beloved wife (Carol) after 34 years of marriage, he found this extremely difficult to cope with; this was compounded by the loss of his beloved Alsatian shortly after Carol’s death.
“Carol suffered a massive stoke and after a two week fight died in intensive care. This was a huge shock to all his family and their friends and he struggled to handle this great loss; however Terry ploughed himself into various biking adventure activities.
“Terry’s friends and family are absolutely devastated by this great loss, Terry was the life and soul of the party, had time for everyone, was always available with a smile on his face and a helping hand. They are all struggling with the fact that he is gone and ask everyone to give the family time to come to terms with this great loss.
“The family would like to particularly express their sympathies to the driver of the lorry and acknowledge what he must be going through at this time.”
Police were forced to close the motorway at Junction 31 yesterday as Mr Cartwright’s body was removed from the road.
Sergeant Jon Allwright from the Road Policing Unit said: “An investigation is underway to establish exactly what happened yesterday and we would appeal for any witnesses to come forward. It is an incredibly difficult time for the family of Mr Cartwright and we offer them our deepest sympathies and we have specially trained officers supporting them.”
