The next Preston Social gathering will take place on Tuesday 24th April, and this month’s topic promises to take you over to the dark side.

Preston Social #10 discusses the perennial issue of trolling, a problem which has been thrust into the spotlight recently by TV presenter Noel Edmonds coming face to face with the author of an online hate page, and only today by the jailing of student Liam Stacey for posting racist Tweets about critically ill footballer Fabrice Muamba.

Claire Hardaker - The Preston Social #10The guest speaker on Tuesday is Claire Hardaker, a lecturer in Linguistics & English Language at the University of Central Lancashire. Trolling features right at the core of her research into aggression, deception, and manipulation in computer-mediated communication (CMC), and she has featured on BBC Three, BBC’s Inside Out  programme and Panorama. The evening will begin with a brief talk by Claire, followed by the usual Social format of discussions, drinks, nibbles and networking.

I will be attending the event on Tuesday, and you can follow mine and everyone else’s tweets using the official #prestonsocial hashtag.

The Preston Social currently resides at The Forum on Winckley Street. Doors open at 6.30pm and free tickets can be obtained here.
