Google maps, travel applications, bus and train alerts – these days we’re spoilt for choice when it comes to planning important journeys. But often drivers aren’t given information about where roadworks are, and how that might disrupt a journey.
AdvertisementRoadworks.org is aiming to change all that. Describing itself as “an information service providing details on road closures, roadworks, obstructions, events and other information for road users”, it provides up to date information for over 70 local authority areas in the UK, with users being able to set up alerts based on their location.
Unfortunately Preston currently isn’t covered, but according to a post on the Guardian’s Data blog:
At present roadworks.org covers 60% of England and Wales. ELGIN are appealing to all local authorities (LAs) who are not yet publishing local roadworks information on the website to join the initiative. LAs can participate in the basic service for free and ELGIN is adding a range of value added services for those who wish to use the system to improve coordination and reduce congestion.
Despite that, it looks like a great tool for if you’re planning a trip around the UK, with specific search functions to look at the travel situation for big events like the Olympics later this year.
