Our local governments are urging us to shop local.

It seems, however, that as much as we know we should people still like to go in to the same convenient shops and buy the same bog standard things.

So it is quite obvious that reasons such as:

  • Less air miles on products is better for the environment
  • boosting the local economy
  • energy efficiency

aren’t quite catching the ethical spirit of consumers.

So I’m here to say… shopping local will make you look fabulous!

Venturing off in to Preston’s sides streets can lead to some great unique shops so that you can walk down the street in an outfit you’re unlikely to find someone else wearing with your head held high because you shopped local.

Let’s make Preston style about flare and originality not ‘that same top from next with those same jeans from Marks and Spencer.’

Preston isn’t exactly blessed with a multitude of shops but lets make the best of what we’ve got.

To get you started, here are my suggestions for some local shops with great style:

Miss Matilda’s Boutique – a gorgeous little boutique down Winkley Street with charming clothes and accessories.

Yi – In The Mall St George, by Costa, is a small little jewellery shop with handbags to die for!

The Market – Upstairs in the indoor market are some great haberdashery stalls. Make clothes, mend clothes, customise clothes!

Glamshackle – Stunning vintage clothing underneath The Closet (another independent shop specialising in menswear). Open Tuesday – Saturday, go inside and down the stairs to a little treasure trove of unique style.

Go have a wander, see what you find and then strut down the street in a piece of true local style.
